5200 Meters! The Longest Seabed Pipeline In The World Runs Smoothly
- May 22, 2018 -

On May 18th, the reconstruction and expansion project of the Hong Kong International Airport ushered in a nodal incident - one of the two parallel new aviation fuel pipelines that crossed the 5200 meters horizontally at a distance of about 130 meters below the sea surface. The project set a new world record for the horizontal directional drilling technology industry to be put into use.

According to Hong Kong media previously reported, "The fuel pipeline renovation project costs 1.3 billion Hong Kong dollars, is an important milestone of 141.5 billion Hong Kong dollars budget overall Hong Kong International Airport three runway system reclamation project ."

According to the report, the crossing project is located near the runway of a busy airport and at the other end is located at Shazhou Island where the beluga and heron bird sanctuary is located and in the Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park. The requirements for safety and environmental protection are extremely high.

It is reported that the construction conditions are extremely demanding. First, the construction site is small and the conventional construction equipment cannot be installed at all. Secondly, mud drilling mud along the way is not allowed to leak outside the seabed, and shazhou island is not allowed to construct at night; in addition, the geology crossing is very complicated. After dozens of meters of backfill stones, fault zones, granite, and extremely hard quartzite, plus the long distances that the pipeline traverses, the comprehensive difficulty of the project is the highest in the world.

According to reports, the general contractor of the project is Huayuan Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Co., Ltd., from Langfang City, Hebei Province. When the Chairman of the project, Shi Zhanhua, received an interview with a reporter from the Science and Technology Daily, he said: “This is a project that attracts worldwide attention for international public bidding. In the round of screening, Huayuan emerged with its core technology of complete independent innovation, outstanding performance, and social integrity.”

Huayuan Company independently designed and manufactured HY-6000ZH combined drilling rig, HY-2000D electric drilling rig, high torque drill pipe, closed loop mud system, casing backfill boring machine, and large torque power reamer The opening and closing type push-pulling machine and the sea oriented positioning system have laid a solid foundation for the smooth progress of the project. On December 27, 2017 and March 9, 2018, these two world longest tunnels, the most difficult construction conditions, and the most complex geological structure of the pipeline crossing were successfully completed.

The Airport Authority of Hong Kong stated that the project has a "zero impact" on the surrounding environment and ecology. The three-runway system project is also moving towards the phased opening of the project from 2022 to 2024.
